About the programme

Meet the Mentors

Eylem Levelt
Cardiologist, Leeds

Eylem is a professor of cardiology at the University of Leeds with specialist interest in diabetic heart disease, multimorbidity, and cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) imaging. Eylem’s research focus is to improve cardiovascular outcomes for patients with type 2 diabetes through multicentre collaborative efforts.

Since the start of her DPhil studies at the University of Oxford her research has been devoted to better understanding the mechanisms of heart disease in type 2 diabetes through application of CMR imaging and cardiac MRS techniques, and the modification of this risk.

Her current and future research focuses on testing novel treatment strategies with randomised clinical trials by monitoring the heart’s response to treatment using CMR imaging and MRS biomarkers to tackle the issue of cardiovascular disease in high risk type 2 diabetes patients.

Claire Lawson
